Right. It is decided.

As of TODAY ( 13th June 2012 ) I am officially stock piling Granny squares to sell individually at craft fairs and then make up into blankets to be A. Part of an Awesome yarn bomb and B. Be auctioned/sold/donated to charity afterwards.

The main aims of this project are to big up the Handmade in Peterborough concept, to raise money for local charities and needy community projects and to plain old inspire people to lift their crocket hook and experience the pleasure of creating something simple yet amazing! I adore granny squaring and this project makes me so happy for many reasons but primarily it allows me to feed my yarn addiction for the good of mankind…..

The specifics of project HIP2B SQUARE will involve a tokenesque system similar to the Waitrose Token system or then FUNDIT SCHEME run over the duration of the Green Festival – People buy a square and give it to the charitys blanket they wish to donate the money to. Then each charities blanket is sewn together for the yarn bomb and then unstitched to sell seperately or donate to the charity afterwards. Sound good? Sounds damn excellent to me!

Id say thats not a bad start 😉

There are a few things however that I REALLY need people’s help with. They are as follows….

I may be a super speedy crocheter…but the thought of making many many Granny squares is both instensely pleasurable and horribly daunting all at the same time. I really need as many people as humanly possible on the granny squaring train to help me achieve my end goal here. If anyone can donate some time to making a few squares for me I would be trully trully greatful (and may pay you in brownie if im feeling the love)
Either drop me an email if you can help or let me know some other way – telepathy may work if i concentrate.

This is help required from a more local source…and THIS excites me. In order to advertise this project EFFECTIVELY at craft fairs etc I wish to find some willing volunteer/victims who arent aversed to a little nudity and tickling to be body painted pretty much all over (with eco vegan facepaints) into a patchwork and drawn on granny squared piece of ART. No. You dont have to be naked. But you Do have to at least be comfortable in skin tight shorts and possibly a bikini if you are female. I’m pretty artistic so this should look very spanky but obviously i need someone willing to stand stillfor quite a long period of time. 🙂

For all you locals, obviously if I am creating a master piece of a body paint then I cannot also sell granny squares. Would anyone be interested in accompanying me in the duty of sitting at craft fairs and taking money, talking about the project, being generally amazing for the cause?
Again, if any is interested in giving me some of their precious time then let me know via facebook or some such fashion.

Depending on where I can organise an event/book a craft fair and how much space we have available, i’ll potentially be looking for more Local people to attend events to teach people to crochet a square to donate. This may not happen yet (i may have to wait til the next time I can do this) but if it does, and you feel you are confident enough to teach others to create magic too…then let yourself be known to me!

So anyway, I really need as much support as I can with this project. This is a kind oftrail run; my main aim is to be able to get lots of community groups such as schools, scouting and guide groups, knitting circles, young at heart circles, etc etc etc involved in making the squares themselves and then coming together to see the final piece. So really, the more successful I can make this, then the more likely it’ll be that i’m able to do it again bigger and better and with lots more people!

Please let me know what you think ofthis, any ideas are very welcome and all the support you can muster is very much needed!

For anyone wishing to make granny squares for me, I am using the following pattern. For continuity’s sake so the squares are about the same size, please follow this pattern. Unless you’re feeling fruity and think you can muster something the same size up with another spiffier pattern…in which case…do that.

Materials: 3mm hook; oddments of either 4 ply or D.K. yarn
I’ve used the word treble to describe the Crochet stitch I used, but apparently some people call it a double due to english/american abbreviations. Its a yarn over once, pull through, YO, pull through 2, YO, pull through other 2 stitch… Not a yarn over twice to begin with stitch – just so were clear. Ok
