There are a couple of ways of doing this, the annoying ‘having to weave all the damn ends in’ way, or the ‘hellz yes ive only got 4 ends to weave in because im a genius’ way….
I’ll assume you want to be a genius like me for now and write the pattern down that way. However if you want to use more than 2 colours then the standard slip stitch fasten off might be easier… Il annotate as and when. Ooook here goes.
With colour A, Ch 10.
Ch 3 ( this will be your first dc) 2dc in 4th ch from hook. This is your first granny square shell. (Skip 2 ch, 3dc in next ch) 3 times. You should now have 4 shells along one edge of your ch. Ch 1. 3dc in same ch as the last shell. Ch 1. 3 dc in same ch again.
You will now have one shell on the side of your ch and one on the other side of the ch.

(3dc shells in same ch as opposite side) 3 times. Sl St beginning of first dc shell. If you are being a genius then DO NOT FASTEN OFF.
You should have 9 x 3dc shells in total; 4 on each side and one on the side.

If you fastened off the last round then just slip stitch fasten colour B into a space between shells, ch 3, 2 dc in same space and then just carry on making 3 dc shells in each space until you reach the last one. Then sl st to the top of the 1st ch 3 you made and fasten off again. You should have 9x 3dc shells in total.
If you are being a Genius then put colour A to one side (still attached!) attach colour B with a sl st and ch 3. 2 dc in same space and then just carry on making 3 dc shells in each space until you reach the last one. Sl st to the top of the 1st ch 3 you made. You should have 9x 3dc shells in total. DO NOT FASTEN OFF.
All NON geniuses repeat Instructions for round 2 in alternating colours for rounds 3 to 11. 3 colours looks good but go crazy and just do what tickles you. You will then have 11 layers of shells.
For you GENIUS crocheters out there, without fastening off, put colour B to one side and pick up colour A again. ( don’t pull this too tightly or you will distort the shape and your awesomeness will be lessened) Sl st into the space you are in and ch 3. 2 dc in the same space then carry on making 3 dc shells in each space until you reach the last one. Sl st to the top of the 1st ch 3 you made. You should have 9x 3dc shells in total. DO NOT FASTEN OFF.
Rounds 4 to 11 for the GENIUS possaey
Repeat round 3, alternating colours.
Attach with a sl st (or not if you’re following the GENIUS way of life) the final colour. Sc in every st around. Finally sl st to join the round and fasten off.
And you’re done. If you have lots of ends to weave in then good luck. Anyone else…. Genius. 🙂
